Heather and Nick get married

Last week was a great week. We officially celebrated the first day of spring, which greeted us with temps in the low to mid 70's. Ahh, I love this time of year (minus the pollen).

I had the opportunity to create a gorgeous wedding cake for an equally sweet couple, Heather and Nick. I have been working with Heather and Nick for over a year in preparation for their big day. They are such a lovely couple and really, seriously, two of the coolest and nicest people you will ever meet.
Their wedding took place at the lovely Port Royal Golf Club located in Port Royal Plantation. Heather and Nick used two different shades of blue to accent their evening reception. They wanted a cake with a feel of the ocean and an obvious depiction of the fact their wedding was a destination wedding. They did not, however, need a beach theme. We decided on an abstract wave pattern using their two blues, and an accent of sugar phaeleonopsis orchids with curly willow (Their wedding flowers).
I also had the pleasure of talking to both Heather and Nick separately just an hour before they were to walk down the matrimonial aisle. They were very relaxed and happy. It was just wonderful! I hope the two of them enjoyed the first glimpse of their wedding cake together and had a fantastic wedding day!

This, is the final product.

The BEAUTIFUL bride, Heather, just an hour before she marries Nick, the man of her dreams!

Long Cove Garden Club visits for a demonstration

Today I had the pleasure of hosting a demonstration for the Long Cove Garden Club. Roughly 30 women, give or take, attended this demo at the studio.
The highlight of the presentation was to showcase my sugar work and flowers to discuss how it co-relates to what they do as a hobby. I demonstrated sugar flower making and coloring, as well as how to properly wire and tape live flowers to avoid contamination in cake. We talked about poisonous flowers, as well as flowers that are food safe and okay to eat (assuming they are organically grown without the use of pesticides or other harsh chemicals). I will post a list of those flowers below. I showed the lovely ladies how to decorate a small cake using live flowers, and then of course we cut and served the cake for all!
I hope they enjoyed the presentation as much as I enjoyed having them!
Here are some photos and then the list of flowers- enjoy!

Alice, Harley, Batman and Wedded Bliss

Last week was full of cool and unusual cakes. Some had 1 meaning, some had 1 very symbolic meaning, and some had a bunch of different items meaning different things. Not catching my drift? Take a look at the photos...they kind of speak for themselves.

This Batman themed cake was created for a little boy named Nathaniel who turned 3. I have had the pleasure of creating every one of Nathaniel's birthday cakes over the (3) years. Happy Birthday Nathaniel
!

This cake was for a lady named Jess who turned 23. Her friends went out of their way to throw her an Alice in Wonderland themed "Mad Hatter' party. The events of the evening included Mad Hatter costume party, a trip to see the opening of 'Alice in Wonderland' the movie, and of course this cool whimsical cake. Lucky girl!

Dave turned 50 and his wife, Stacie, surprised him with a party and this cool cake, oh yes...and a ZR1 Corvette...one of only a handful in the U.S I've been told! Dave is an adventure thrill seeker. He sky dives for a hobby/passion, he love Harley-Davidson Motorcycles and Corvettes. Dave sounds like a pretty cool guy, very deserving of a cool cake!

Calli and Aaron wed on Hilton Head. Callie wanted a light blue butter cream finish complete with sugar shells and live calla lilies. Congratulations Calli and Aaron!

New Pictures of cakes, new pictures of baby Cameron and a few updates

Hello all! Blogs seem to be few and far between these days. I am sad to say I have been a slacker, but for a very very good reason...we are BUSY! We stay crazy busy through the year, but this January, February and March have been the craziest I've ever had! Definitely not complaining and I think it's a good sign of things to come.

So, where did I leave you last? I know you all probably want to see new pictures of the boys, and of course the cakes!

Before you do, I want to share a few of the happenings as of late.

First, Hospice Care of the LowCountry held it's annual Hospice Hearts fundraiser. This year it was called 'Hospice, Hearts and You'. As usual, I was asked to provide a cake for the celebration. I opted to create a cake to appeal to the fashionista or material girl in all of us. This cake, complete with sugar shoes, shoe boxes and handbags all made of cake, was created with love and support for our local area hospice. You may remember last year, I was commissioned to create the handbags for the 'Hospice, Hearts and Handbags' event. Click the link HERE to view last years event and cakes.
Here is this year's cake:

Another item worthy of mention that I was awarded WeddingWire.com's 'Bride's Choice Award 2010'. This means I am among the top 5% of wedding vendors in the nation. What an honor and a privilege. It's all because of the reviews from my loyal past clients. So, if you've received a wedding cake from me in the past, be sure to log onto www.WeddingWire.com and review your experience.

Oh Yes! I almost forgot to mention it SNOWED here in Hilton Head last month! What craziness! Nathan and Gary enjoyed building a snowman and having a snowball fight. This was Nathan's first snow!

Lastly, before I get into recent pictures...I have to thank our friends Scott and Melissa Hopkins of Scott Hopkins Photographer for coming out to shoot the boys (photos, not literally). These photos will be cherished by our family always...so, I'd like to share them. Check out their web site HERE.

Here, also, are pictures of some of the cakes I've been busy creating this month.

Thanks for taking a peek and checking in for an update. Stay tuned in the coming weeks as I am announcing big news that has me squealing with excitement!!

Hilton Head Island's 20th Annual Taste of the Season

This blog will be written in 3 parts. First I will explain the Taste of the Season event, second I will explain the Cake Design Showcase portion of the event, and lastly I will tell you about some awesome people, without whom my participation in the event would not have been possible. Buckle up...this blog will be a long one!

Hilton Head Island/Bluffton Chamber of Commerce host an annual event called 'Taste of the Season'. If you are unfamiliar with the event, it is a celebration of the beginning of the holiday season in which area restaurants and local chefs prepare and serve samplings of their finest cuisine. Around 1000 guests attend the event annually and over 30 area chefs participate. It is great food, great fun and very very festive. It really kicks off the holiday season each year. This year the event was held at The Sea Pines Country Club, which is a very large and beautiful venue...perfect for this event. The title of 'Best Cuisine' went to Aqua Grille and Lounge Executive Chef Eric Seaglund. We're so incredibly happy for them!! Very much deserved.

This year, the Taste of the Season also hosted a Best Holiday Cake Contest in which 5 area confectionary artists, including myself competed for the title of 'Best Holiday Cake'. We were asked to present a cake which depicts the holidays and what they mean to us, which will also be served at the event. Bluffton Today and The Island Packet both wrote great articles on the event in which myself and the other artists were featured, click on the links for the papers to check out the articles.

Sheri's Edible Designs took top prize of 1st Place with our stacked gift box cake, complete with edible bows and decorations, trimmed in edible glitter and topped with a snowman. ( See Photos at the end of the blog post). The cake took me 2o hours to create and would serve roughly 500. Not to mention in weighed a ton! It was a very fun project, but very labor intensive...I'm also 8 months pregnant. Whew! In the end, all of the artists displayed awesome cakes and I was so happy to be invited to be amongst everyone at the event.

Our journey to the event almost didn't happen though and here is the "behind the scenes" story.-

Anytime you create a towering cake which has to defy gravity, you would like to make sure you know your boundaries, which include width, weight and of course....height. Well, I measured all aspects of those boundaries and came up with the magic numeric limitations. I knew how tall ( or short) the cake had to be to fit into the delivery vehicle. I measured and measured again. Well, we were asked by event coordinators to begin set up between 3:30 and 4:45 so we would be set 45 minutes prior to event start time. With this in mind, we set out to leave the shop with all our gear around 3pm.
We go to load the car and LOW AND BEHOLD THE CAKE IS TOO TALL!!! Yes, 1 inch too tall. There is no way to take away height and no way to maneuver it to fit. At that moment, my hard tireless efforts seemed for nothing....it was too late to find a backup.
In all the chaos and clamor I decided to do what I know best to do....call a friend for help. That's just what I did.....

You see, Gary and I have these amazing friends, Jamie and Liz Bodie. We work very closely with the Bodie family, both personally and professionally. They own MyHiltonHeadWedding.com which hosts their two businesses- Jamie's Porta Party ( an amazing DJ and entertainment company) as well as LowCountry Lights, which cater to all your lighting needs, from LED's to lighted dance floors, monograms to japanese lanterns.....they do it all and I have to say are darn amazing at it! As much as the Bodie's are great business partners, they are wonderful people...eager and willing to lend a hand to those in need.
I frantically called Liz with a message something like "Liz if you get this in the next 10 minutes CALL ME!!!!!!"
Of course she did and then I asked " can I borrow your van?" haha like who does that?? I thought for certain anyone I asked would say...."what? Like borrow MY car, like,......now.....really?" But Liz said "Would you like the big van, or the Suburban?" Priceless. Gracious. Giving......that's a cool lady right there! I'm not trying to schmooze and sing tireless praises for any old reason.....Liz and Jamie literally saved the competition for me. We went to get their super cool, super big van and without time to thank them, literally sped off to make up for lost time. I think my husband got back to my store, loaded the cake and accompanying supplies, and got us to Sea Pines faster than I can tie my shoes ( 8 months pregnant anyway)! It is all a blur and record time. We got to Sea Pines and set up with literally, honestly and in no way exaggerated 2 minutes to spare before event start time. Whew....not to mention we set up the table with the beautiful uplighting Jamie and Liz so kindly borrowed us moochers the day before!

It is safe to say I owe them some cake! So, please call these kind folks for all your DJ and Lighting needs!!! I mean it!

Thanks again guys, everyone for your support and well wishes.....we did it!

On to some pictures!
